Review : Sardaar Gabbar Singh – Impresses in bits

Release date : April 08th, 2016
www.jilwel.com Rating : 3.25/5
Director : K. S. Ravindra (Bobby)
Producer : Eros International, Sharrath Marar
Music Director : Devi Sri Prasad
Starring : Pawan Kalyan, Kajal Aggarwal

The day which we were all waiting for is finally here. Pawan Kalyan’s big budget film, Sardaar Gabbar Singh has hit the screens with a lot of pre-release buzz today. Let’s see whether it lives up to its expectations or not.
Story:-
Gabbar Singh(Pawan Kalyan) is a happy go lucky cop who gets transferred to a ruthless town called Ratanpur. Upon his arrival, he finds out that the entire town is suffering from the evil deeds of Bhairav Singh(Sharad Kelkar).
As time passes by, the princess of Ratanpur, Arshi(kajal) falls in love with Gabbar Singh. Twist in the tale arises when Gabbar Singh comes to know that he is actually sent to that town to solve the problems of Arshi and her royal family which is under the threat of Bhairav Singh.
Rest of the story is as to how Gabbar Singh fights with the mighty Bhairav Singh and solves problems of both Arshi and the entire village.
Plus Points:-
Probably, the one and major asset of Sardaar is power star himself. Right from the word go, it is Pawan’s histrionics that takes center stage. Whatever the fans expect from Pawan, he has given them in a platter. Be it with punch dialogues, dances or fights, Pawan has mesmerized in his role.
Kajal looks drop dead gorgeous as a princess. She has lost weight and looks superb in all her royal costumes. Sharad Kelkar makes a solid Tollywood debut. He is menacing as the bad guy and performs his role to the T. All his confrontational scenes with Pawan Kalyan have been executed well.
First half of the film is quite good with some interesting fan moments. Brahmanandam is decent in his role and evokes some laughs. Interval bang and the comedy skit that comes during the second half has been written well. Mukesh Rishi does his supporting role naturally.
Minus Points:-
Story of the film is ages old and has nothing much interesting to offer. The first half an hour during the second half goes for a toss as the proceedings deviate from the topic completely. Also, the presence of two back to back songs in the second half disturb the flow of the film big time.
There are no major twists and turns as the film moves on a single thread till the end. The proceedings are quite predictable and the climax is also wrapped up in an unconvincing manner. After showcasing Sharad Kelkar’s character in such a powerful light during the first half, he is completely sidelined and becomes ineffective towards the end.
Technical Aspects:-
Music by Devi Sri Prasad is decent as most of the songs suit the mood of the film well. Screenplay by Pawan Kalyan lacks the necessary punch as most of the scenes in the second half go wayward. Dialogues are pretty good and those written for Pawan elevate his charisma. Production values are quite good and special mention should go to the art department for putting up the beautiful Ratanpur set and making it look quite realistic.
Coming to the director Bobby, he has done just an average job with the film. He has dragged a simple point to unnecessary lengths and made the film look tedious at places. But credit should go to him for showcasing Pawan Kalyan in a way that fans will be hugely satisfied with.
Verdict:-
On the whole, Sardaar Gabbar Singh will surely go well with all Pawan Kalyan fans. Right from the word go, it is Pawan’s solid screen presence and energetic performance that will bind you completely. Impressive first half and some stylish thrills are basic assets. But a weak story line, lengthy run time and a dragged out second half spoil the fun to an extent and make this film exclusive for fans only.

Review : DJ – Duvvada Jagannadham – Decent mix of comedy and action

Release date : June 23, 2017
www.jilwel.com Rating : 3.5/5
Director : Harish Shankar
Producer : Dil Raju
Music Director : Devi Sri Prasad
Starring : Allu Arjun, Pooja Hegde

The wait is finally over as the much-awaited action entertainer, DJ has finally hit the screens on a massive scale. Let’s see whether it gives Allu Arjun yet another hit in his career.
Story :-
Dhuvvada Jaganadham(Allu Arjun) is a small time brahmin boy who goes against all odds and helps others. Seeing this quality of his, a high-profile cop(Murali Sharma) asks him to become DJ, a man who fights crime in disguise.
This is the same time when Dhuvaada falls in love with Pooja(Pooja Hegde) the daughter of a high profile minister(Posani) involved with yet another crime lord Royyala Naidu(Rao Ramesh) who also operates in disguise.
On the other hand, DJ decides to take on Royyala Naidu in his mission but does not know who he is in actual life. Rest of the story is as to how Duvvada Jagannadham alias DJ manages to finish Royyala Naidu.
Plus Points :-
One of the biggest assets of this film is undoubtedly Allu Arjun and his performance. Bunny is top notch in both his characters as Duvvada and Dj. But he is the best when he becomes Duvvada as his diction, comedy touch and mannerisms are hilarious. The star hero carries the entire film on his shoulders and makes the film watchable which has an otherwise routine storyline.
Pooja Hegde is yet another star attraction for the film. She looks drop dead gorgeous and will be an eye candy for the youth and masses alike. She matches equal steps with Bunny and her chemistry with the star hero is just awesome. The first forty minutes of the film has very good entertainment with good doses of comedy.
The climax of the film is quite comical and has been handled well even though it looks a bit over the top. Subba Raju is impressive in his role and evokes good comedy. Rao Ramesh emulates his dad, Rao Gopala Rao from Aa Okkati Adakku and does his best.
Minus Points :-
Like in many other movies of late, the second half of the film is quite weak. There is hardly any story to tell here and director Harish Shankar makes the villain’s track a bit weak during this time.
Bunny’s fans would a be a bit disappointed as their star hero has not danced to his full capacity in DJ. The length of the film is also a bit high and has a lag in many areas and gets predictable and routine most of the time. The hero-villain tug of war is not that gripping.
Technical Aspects :-
Production values by Dil Raju are excellent as he has spent a lot of money and it shows on screen. DSP’s music is decent as all the songs have been inserted cleverly into the proceedings. Background score is very impressive and elevates the film well. Dialogues by Harish Shankar have a lot of tongue and cheek humor. Editing is quite weak as at least 10 minutes of the film can be trimmed easily.
Coming to the director Harish Shankar, he has done a decent job with his execution. He has written Bunny’s character quite well and his intention behind the protagonist’s fight for the society is also good. But he too disappoints during the second half as he dips the proceedings with some below average execution. But credit should go to him for showcasing Bunny in a powerful manner and also ends the film on a happy note.
Verdict :-
On the whole, DJ is an out and out Allu Arjun film to the core. The star hero is a major attraction and carries the film with his energetic performance. Pooja Hegde’s glamor, good comedy, and some mass elements will go supremely well with the masses. Collections wise, this film will do quite well as there is no big film coming up in the near future. Finally, if you ignore the routine story line, lag in the second half and keep your expectations in check, DJ ends up as a good watch this weekend.

Review : Jaya Janaki Nayaka – Boyapati mark action entertainer

Release date : August 11, 2017
www.jilwel.com Rating 3.5/5
Director : Boyapati Srinu
Producers : M. Ravinder Reddy
Music Director : Devi Sri Prasad
Starring : Bellamkonda Sai Srinivas, Rakul Preet Singh, Catherine Tresa, Pragya Jaiswal

Mass entertainers specialist, Boyapati Sreenu has come up with his new film Jaya Janaki Nayaka. The film which has Bellamkonda Srinivas as the main lead has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.
Story :-
Gagan(Sai Srinivas) is a rich kid who leads a happy life with his family. On the other hand, Sweety(Rakul Preet) gets impressed with Gagan’s grounded attitude and falls for him at once. When everything seems to be going fine, she leaves him all of a sudden and goes away with her dad. Why did she ditch him? What are the situations that lead to? and how will Gagan win his love back?. To know answers to these, you have to watch the film on the silver screen.
Plus Points :-
Boyapati Sreenu’s idea of making a beautiful love story with out missing his trademark elements is very good. After Badra, this is his full fledged love story. Rakul Preet Singh looks gorgeous and also shows superb modulation as the film gets serious. The entire film revolves around her character which is a major soul for the film.
Bellamkonda Srinivas has improved a lot and impresses with his dances and fights. Boyapati has designed yet another powerful character for Jagapathi Babu after Legend and JB gives a standout performance. Sharath Kumar and Nandu suit their respective roles well.
Bollywood actor, Tarun Araro was good as the baddie. Pragya Jaswal’s glamour show will be a treat for the masses. Special mention should go to the interval block and Hamsaladeevi episodes as they have been showcased in a stunning way.
Minus Points :-
One of the major drawbacks of the film is the lack of comedy. Boyapati should have worked on it for a better output. Yesteryear heroine, Vani Viswanath’s role is not up to the mark and not at all helpful to the proceedings.
After a superb interval block, the film falls flat and things become tedious for some time. The climax fight looks a bit over the top and the special number which comes in the pre climax was not picturized well. The film has a routine story line and nothing much is there to boast about it.
Technical Aspects :-
Boyapati Sreenu should be appreciated for his work as he satisfies the mass audience with enough fights and commercial elements. The only thing his direction lacked was the addition of comedy quotient. Editing by Kotagiri Venkateshwara Rao is okay but the film can be trimmed for five minutes or so.
Camerawork by Rishi Punjabi is brilliant as every frame looks very rich and lavish. Action stunts by Ram Lakshman are good as three major action blocks in the film are designed supremely well. Music by Devi Sri Prasad is good and his background score is apt for the genre of the film. Production values for this high budget entertainer are very rich.
Verdict :-
On the whole, Jaya Janaki Nayaka is a typical Boyapati mark action love story which is clearly aimed at the single screens. The film which will find few takers in the overseas has a superb interval block, many action episodes and enough eye candy to please the mass audience big time. Even though the story gets predictable and pace of the film drops during the second half, this film makes up for a good time pass watch this weekend.
